Staff Spotlight Saturday–Mira Designs

Hello, everyone! Happy Saturday! Becky here with our weekly staff spotlight.  I don’t know about you, but there are certain designers that seriously make it easy to make a layout look great.  Minna also known as Mira Designs is one of those designers for me.  She makes really beautiful things and I am so excited to get to know her a little bit better and share it with all of you!

Here is some of our “interview”:

Can you give us a little bio? where you live, married, kids, etc.?

I’m a 29-year-old girl from Finland that’s a small country in the northern Europe. I’m currently single so I don’t have any kids of my own yet but I’m a proud aunt of a half-year-old girl! Besides of designing I’m studying to become a dental hygienist and I’ll graduate in December. I’ve also studied Computer Science and that’s why starting digital scrapbooking was an easy choice for me. In addition to scrapbooking and designing, I enjoy photography, reading, skiing, hanging out with my friends and their kids and travelling.

How long have you been designing? do you have a favorite aspect of it and what inspires you?

I’ve been designing for a couple of years now but I didn’t show my designs in public until one and a half years ago when I gave out my first freebie. And a little after that I started selling my designs. As for most of the designers, designing and scrapping is my creative outlet and I love to see all the different ways people use my stuff. I get inspiration from almost everywhere, but mostly from magazines and catalogs, fabrics and surfing the internet.

do you have a favorite kit or element pack that you have designed?

Hmm.. this is a difficult one as I think my favourites change almost every time I create something new… ;) But at the moment, my favourite kit is Peacock Walk, even though it’s not quite my typical style.

which do you prefer……cook or eat out?

Well, it depends… ;) I like cooking and trying new things but it’s great to enjoy a good meal out sometimes too.

…..go to the movies or curl up on the couch at home?

Mostly I curl up on the couch but whenever there’s a good movie in the theatre I’m all ready to get out for a movie night.

….surf the net or read a book?

Even though I like reading a lot my time usually goes surfing on the internet. But during the summer time, there’s nothing better than to enjoy the sun shine outside while reading a good book.

what is your favorite ….method of transportation?

Being a student and not having a car, my favourite method of transportation is my bicycle… ;)

….beverage?

Pepsi

snack food?

I’m not sure whether ice cream can be counted as snack food but that’s definately my favourite!

I say, it can be counted as a snack! :)

Here is one of my favorite kits of Minna’s  Whoooo Loves Fall

and here is a page I did with it:

and one with her newest kit Sweet Bird

I hope that you have enjoyed getting to know a little more about Mira Designs, now head over to her http://www.thedigichick.com/shop/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=43#mce_temp_url#and check out the rest of her awesome goodies!

Early for the holidays: Gifts in a jar!

HYBRID GIFTS IN A JAR

Start off by creating the jar label to suit your specific project. I have chosen pumpkin bread jars to give to friends and family around Thanksgiving. Since it’s still a bit early for the holiday, I don’t have my ingredients in the jar yet, but you get the idea! Create your label and make sure you design it so when trimmed, it will fit all the way around the jar. Make sure your jars are washed and dried before you start. After the label is attached, you can embellish your lid. I used coordinating striped fabric from my sewing stash. I glued the fabric on, then attached two coordinating colors of rickrack around the sides. It really is THAT simple!

There are multitude of websites featuring recipes for the jar gifts, ranging from cookies to brownies, cornbread to cakemixes.. and more …AND, I love that these are so easy! This is a great site because it gives you lots of ideas outside of recipes, too (bath salts, etc…) If you purchase the pre-made gifts in a jar, you’re going to spend anywhere from $10 on up, and that can get pricey! Going this route you can save tons, and get rid of some extra jars if you’re a saver like me. If you don’t have a stockpile of jars, you can purchase canning jars relatively inexpensively at any of your grocery stores or Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, etc. If you really want to simply and don’t want to measure out ingredients (like the ones for the layered cookie mix in a jar), you can buy a brownie mix and pour it in the jar - some are as low as $1! Pour it in there, type up the baking instructions and make a cute tag and you’re done!

Tutorial Tuesday - Text on a Path

Well, it’s still Tuesday where I am:) I hope you find this tutorial on text paths helpful. I’ve seen a lot of chat in different forums about how to make and use text paths. So, I decided to show you how to create a path around a favorite element! Let’s get started! (I use PSCS2 to scrap, so you’ll have to adapt some commands if you use another version or program to scrap.)

First open the element you want to use and place it on your layout. I chose a cute bracket frame from the Fall Collab.

Hold down the Control key and click on the element in your layers palette. You’ll see marching ants around your element.

Next, you’ll need to create a new, empty layer over your element by using the command Shift+Ctrl+N. If having the element is too distracting, you can turn off the visibility of you custom shape by clicking on the eye to the left of the element in the layers palette. You’ll still have the marching ants in the shape of your element and your new empty layer should be the active layer.

Now you’ll need to open your paths palette if it is not already by going to Windows -> Paths.

Then, click on the small arrow in the upper right corner of the paths palette and select “Make Work Path” from the drop down menu. Click OK to accept the default 2.0 from the pop-up dialogue box.

Finally, select your text tool and with your empty layer active, click on the shape’s work path where you want to your text to begin. As you type, your text will follow your path. I wrote “Happy Halloween”. You can change the font, color, etc just like any other text.

Here’s what it looks like once I make my bracket visible again.

Have fun playing around text paths and I can’t wait to see what you create in the gallery!

Scoring and Paper Piercing

Bug Me CardHi, it’s Savitri here and today I want to talk about a few simple technique to spice up your hybrid project. First I have this sample to the left.

As you can see very little embellishments but I added some paper piercing and a score line under the pattern paper. How?

The paper piecing is super easy. I use a Making Memories piercing mat and needle which is very similar to this (this one is a Stampin’ Up! set) but you can use your mouse pad, put your paper over the pad, and use a big needle, like the one you use for stitching and start piercing, or this and start piercing. You can eyeball the distance or use a ruler if you’re particular. Very easy and fun. After you get a hang of it you can do circles or a flight path. I think the last is one of my favorites, butterfly and its flight path.

The next is scoring. For scoring you need to have a scoring tool and this thing comes in many shape. The least expensive is a bone folder. With a bone folder you can just put a ruler across your paper and act like you’re creating a straight with your folder instead of a pencil. Another way is to more your cutter to the top or bottom, place the paper on a paper trimmer and “roll” the bone folder over the paper or purchase a scor tool that fits your trimmer. Just a hint though, when you have a trimmer and a scoring tool for your trimmer, make sure you pay attention or remove the trimmer before you scor. This way you won’t accidentally cut your paper. I know :) There are tools just for scoring but if you’re new or just do this here and there the above is just great.

Now, if you’re wondering what I used to distress my black circle paper. I use a distressing edge tool like this one. I have an oooold model but this and the piercing tool are my two favorites for my projects.

Material:
Digital Element by Mira Design
Paper by Sassafrass Lass
Cardstock by Stampin’ Up
Tools Scor-It, paper piercer, and edge distresser
Ribbon was just found amongst my stash
