I thought I'd give this a shot here since I know we have some awesome and very knowledgable ladies out there...

My dr prescribed Clindamycin for me to try to make sure I don't get a staph infection while my c-section incision heals. Problem is, warning label stuff says it comes through breast milk and that it's a "very serious antibiotic". Is it safe to breastfeed on this stuff? I go back to the dr tomorrow morning (and to Kate's dr as well), so I can ask then, but DH picked the meds up from the pharmacy and our usual pharmacist (who is always reliable about warning about stuff like this) wasn't there.

While I'm at it...will Clindamycin also treat a sinus infection and/or strep throat (just in case that's where this thing is heading), too? lol I know I should get to an urgent care place or something, but I can't drive yet and if the Clindamycin is going to handle it, I'd rather save the copay and the time/driving hassle.

Gosh, I sound like a nutcase, don't I? Put it off to not getting any sleep. Heck, never mind...you guys know me and know that I AM a nutcase! lol

Thanks for any sage words!

You're not a nut case to worry about these things, Sinead!
I have no idea - but is your regular pharmacist going to be back on duty soon, so you could call and ask him? Or do you have a hotline number through your insurance that you could speak to a phar. or nurse or doc and ask?

I would ask first... because everyone is different. But, 2 weeks after my SIL had a C Section she went on 2 long courses of strong antibiotics for a UTI... so, i know it does happen. I'm with Michelle though, I'd at least try the Ask-A- Nurse hotline.

Does your hospital have lactation nurses on staff? I think, since it's Sunday, you could call the nursery and ask to speak to a lactation nurse (or the most lactation-knowledgable one working today.) They could allay your concerns by letting you know that this med is commonly used in BFing moms... or else they can certainly reach the doctor if they have questions. I imagine they will even see your delivering doc at some point today.

I am sure it's fine, but you will want to put your mind at ease!

Call the emergency room staff or an urgent care clinic. I wouldn't take the chance if you are not sure. They had just come out with a study that infants who get put on antibiotics for long periods of time or more often than older children, are more apt to get early childhood asthma. That's what was wrong with Riley. That poor kid was on antibiotics so much as an infant because she was always sick.

Your the mama and you should go by your gut instinct. If your innerself is having doubts because you want to protect your baby, then don't do it until you talk to a professional. Hope everything works out okay Sinead. I'll pray for ya.

I found this site

http://www.perinatology.com/exposures/druglist.htm

and on this site the drug is listed under Probably Safe in Usual Doses

http://www.babycenter.com/general/baby/babybreastfeed/8790.html

It also looks like this antibiotic is for vaginal and abdominal infections. Not sure if it would cover sinus.

Of course, if you have questions you should call the hospital or pharmacy.
