We are getting 2 little animal type pets this weekend from the parents of a friend of a friend. I am told they are "degas" (probably spelling that wrong), which comes from Australia and is like a squirrel in the US. Can you tell me how to spell that correctly so I can google it? Do you happen to know anything about them? They are apparently "fixed" and share the same cage, which will be in my boys room. Are they safe to have as pets?

My first thought was "sugargliders," which don't sound much like "degas," but they're like flying squirrels and are supposed to make amazing pets. I saw a movie or TV show that mentioned them and looked them up...they're really cute :)

Well you learn something new everyday!! I don't think they come from Australia though. Anyway I found this link that might be helpful to you.
