AUBURN, N.H. -- A woman was rescued from her sinking car in Auburn on Monday after she drove onto a flooded road.
Officials said the woman somehow missed the barricades on Wilson Crossing Road and ended up in 4 feet of water. Witnesses said the car initially floated in the water before beginning to sink. When the driver didn't get out, bystander Fred McNeill jumped in to rescue her.
"Luckily, it was a convertible, because if it wasn't, it would have been a tough situation," McNeill said. "A guy helped by bringing a screwdriver over. I was able to poke a hole and tear through the top, and instantly, she popped her head up to get air."
Drivers across the state were confronted with road closures as a nor'easter dumped several inches of rain into swollen rivers and streams. Officials said that drivers need to use caution and not disregard barricades and attempt to cross flooded roadways.
