What I did was researched flashes and what was compatible with my camera. Then tried to find some reviews on them to see what people who owned them had to say.

I've been hunting around for flashes too.

I just went looking at Canon and then bought one that wasn't the top-end price/name brand. I am very happy with it. Dh buys everything on Ebay at a store (brand new) so, it wasn't too costly. (at least, I don't think so.)

I think you need to determine how much power you will need and then do your research based on that. A flash with a good amount of power and variable control functions will likely run about $200.

This website has great user reviews of flashes, cameras and lenses: Fred Miranda (http://www.fredmiranda.com/). Click on the Review button at the top.

I just bought the new Canon 430ex for my DR XT. I like it so far and am trying to learn more about it.
