I am so sad!
Sadie was our first baby... she's the shepherd we got before Nate and I got married. We've had her for 7 years.
But we've made the heartbreaking descision that she isn't moving with us to MD in the next week and a half. If we end up buying a town house, she'd be miserable. And we couldn't keep her in one anyways b/c of her barking and aggression.
We haven't really tried very hard to find her a home (ie. ad in the paper) b/c of her history with biting. We can't in good conscience give her to someone knowing that she could bite them, and then what if they want to sue us?
Sooo..... we have been trying to get in contact with some Shepherd Rescue places near us here and near DC, but haven't actually talked to anyone yet.
If that doesn't work out.... we have an aweful appointment scheduled at the vet this Sat.
We are so torn up about this. I saw a dog commercial last night and it already made me cry.

Awww, Andrea, sorry to hear that you won't be bringing Sadie with you. We had to get rid of our cats because of almost the same thing when we moved.
I hope the rescue comes through for you and can help you find a great home for your Sadie.

Aww Andrea I'm so sorry you have to make a decision like that! {{Hugs}} But I'm sure whatever happens is what is meant to be. But it is still a hard thing to do.
We had to put our dalmatian Rocky down about 3 years ago, he had hip dysplasia & could hardly get around the backyard anymore. Rob got him as a puppy when we were dating so we'd had him for about 8-9 years. But after watching him lay in the back yard in the pouring rain cause it was too painful to get up & either come onto the porch or go in his dog house & then when I went out in the rain to bring him in the garage he slipped on the cement & fell I knew we had to do something. So we chose to put him down & it was so so hard! Kaylie still remembers when Rocky went to "doggy heaven" and she was only 2.

Awww, Andrea, I'm so sorry! This is definitely a very hard decision to make, but I know you'll make the best one for Sadie and you. A dog with biting history is very hard to find a home for, though, so even if a shelter would take her, she'd probably stay there forever, and that's not a fun life for a dog! (((((Hugs)))))), sweetie!

Aww man! I'm so sorry! I wish I could take her... she might force my crazy dog into submission, lol! Ok, no jokes. Have you called around to some of the local humane societies? If they have the space they're usually compassionate to these kinds of dogs. If the newspaper or news channel is short on stories they might do one on this circumstance. I know it sounds like I'm joking, but I'm not. (((hugs)))

Oh sweetie. I'm so sorry. Dogs are truley members of our families and I know how hard it is to have to let one go. We had 2 Jack Russells before the boys came and we were only able to give them away because we knew they were going to good homes. I'm sure that it will work out to that you can cancel that vet appointment!
Speaking of vets, have you contacted them to see if they know of a good home for her? Just a thought.

(((hugs))) I hope that you can find a home for him. Are there any other rescue agencies around--like not a shepherd only rescue group?

Oh yeah Mimi... its been kinda quick. We found out a couple weeks ago, and have a week and a half left to move about 400 miles from NW Penn to outside Wash DC.
Kind of Good News!
One of the rescue places called us and we are "sort of" in talks with them. So Nate canceled tomorrow's appnt... but he did reschedule it for next Sat if this doesn't work out for some reason.
This Rescue place is in OH, and they mentioned that they might already have a family that would be perfect... they had a similar dog who just died. So they were asking us to send over Sadie's papers and pics of her.
I'm still very sad that we are going to be saying goodbye, one way or another!

I can understand it's sad to say goodbye to her, but hopefully she'll find a new family! Keeping my fingers crossed for that!

I'm sorry you have to make this kind of decision. I had to leave our lab behind when we moved to Japan because he was too big

I'm so sorry, Andrea!
So glad that you got in contact with the shelter though - that will make it all somewhat easier! Let us know what happens!

I'm glad you have a lead on a new family for her, but no matter what, it's hard to make those decision, even when it's the right one. ((((HUGS))))

(((Andrea))) Does your Humane Association not do the waiting list thing? If you can get her on their waiting list, it is more likely they will not put her to sleep, and will keep her until she is adopted out :)

I hope it works out for you Andrea. We had a similar situation with a cat of ours. She started attacking our 3rd baby and I tried to find a good home, but no one wants a 13 yr old cat that attacks babies so we made the difficult decision to have her go to the nursing home for old cats (what we told the older kids) :D I had that cat since college (before my dh) and it was a tough decision, but my baby came first!

So here's the update.
The Shepherd Rescue lady put us in touch with a Shepherd trainer in our county. It turns out that his neighbor is an elderly man, whose wife died years ago and his shepherd of 11 years just passed away. He didn't want a puppy (b/c of his age and energy). But he did want another shepherd for a watch dog and a companion.
So we met with the 2 men this afternoon. The trainer is a good neighbor, checking our Sadie for the elderly man, and it seems that it is a great fit. So Sadie went home with her new master. The trainer kept reassuring us that she was going to a great place, where he would love her and devote on her, and that there was a great yard. He also offered that we could call and check up on her whenever.
I'm a mess right now, but I feel better about her quality of life.

That's wonderful! Still not easy, but much better than not knowing where she's going (or even worse).
