I think it's about time to start this, since I would like to say publicly, once and for all...
I am not Char. :rofl::rofl::rofl:
When I was starting first grade, the kindergarten teacher called me Char, and it was the first time anyone had done that. I went home bewildered and told my mom "the teacher called me Char!" She said, "if you don't like it, ask her not to do it again!" So since then, I have.
I know some people love to shorten names, or have friends who do go by Char, so I don't get upset like I did in high school (that, and when someone tickled me, were the only times my redheaded temper showed itself) but if you think of it, please call me Charlene!
(oh, and this is why I rarely shorten anyone else's name).
So do you have anything you'd like to get off your chest??

Nothing else comes to mind right now, so I'll share this (along the same lines)....
My daughter CAMILLE is NOT "CAMMIE!" ugh...for crying out loud! I simply hate that. Now, several of her friends called her "Mille" before they could pronounce her name, and that was pretty cute, but there's just no reason under the sun why an adult needs to call her "CAMMIE."
I have made my preferences known. When we were pregnant & had her name picked out already, several family members asked, "Oh, Camille, what a pretty name. Don't you want to call her Cammie for short?" My answer was always a very polite no, I don't really care for that. Think I should get out my teacher's red pen and correct the card that we just received addressed to CAMMIE? LOL!!

DH thought I was nuts for paying so much attention to nicknames when we were planning names both times. I totally didn't think of "Jas" or "Jazzy" though...and heard it the day Jasmine was born. I don't hear that much anymore though!

UMMM I am so glad I am not the only one annoyed by it LOL... I named Kaitlyn just that... I did not realize people would shorten it to Katie (which really is not shorter, it still has 2 syllables).... She does not care though, and I think prefers Katie, since she has been going by that at school for quite some time now, and I was not aware right away LOL... I am not allowed to call her Katie though...

I'm the opposite of you guys - I love nicknames - I think of them as pet names that only people who feel comfortable enough with me will use. My name is Andrea and only my very best friends called me Ann in highschool. Some of them still do and I LOVE it. However, I do hate when people say my name incorrectly - I used to hate it, now I don't care. I say it Anndrea - I don't care for Awndrea. Sounds hoity, toity! lol
I try to respect what name people choose for themselves - so it's all good!!!!
WOW - was that a rant or what?!

To be honest, I hate it when folks call me "Rach" instead of "Rachel"....however, I will allow my best friend to use it....but that's it.
But what I really hate? DH's name is Robert. He goes by "Bob" --- to everyone but his family. They apparently all called him "Bobby" because one of his BILs was named Bob, and it was their way of being clear who they were talking about. That's kinda cute, but not any more....he's 41 and his family still calls him Bobby....but *I* get the "killer glare of death" if I even hint that I'm going to say Bobby....(did I mention that none of his family can spell my name right?)

Okay, with a name like Kresta, I've been called it all! LOL! I've resorted to saying "it sounds like the toothpaste with an "uh" on the end and spelled w/ a "K".
And, my hubby's name is Joe Michael. He has been called John Michael more than we could ever count.
So it's kinda our joke w/ each other. When we're being silly he'll call me Krista and I'll call him John Michael! :)

HAAA!!!!! Love these.
Since we are on the name thing. I HATE HATE HATE being called Kimmie. Oh man it gets under my skin. I have a cousin that has called me that since I was little and she is literally the only one that can say it without me wanting to throw a punch :giggle:
I use Kimberly for all things professional but everyone just calls me Kim.
AS for nicknames in general though...I LOVE them. All my kids have them
Amalie is Amie-doodle or Ams
Kaelyn is Kaekerbug or Cake.
Braydon is Bubba
Jack is Woogie and Jack-o-lantern (his daddy calls him that)

Yeah, I guess I should clarify a wee bit..... Although I simply hate "Cammie," I LOVE the little nicknames that we use for Camille.
We've always called her Monkey for some reason, and all kinds of plays on that - Spunky Monkey, etc. I also call her "Cha-cha" and "Chicken." Um, not quite sure why, but she loves it.

well, NO ONE can pronouce my name (unless they are French LOL) it is EEvette not YUHvette! There are a couple friends that do the Yuhvette, but they just do it to bug me LOL! DH is and always has been "Scottie", doesn't bother either one of us, The only nickname owen has ever been called is OJ (Owen Joseph) and he put a stop to it right away (at 3 years old haha!). OJ doesn't bother me though as they called my Grandfather that all the time.

I say it Anndrea - I don't care for Awndrea. Sounds hoity, toity! lol
Hey me too! Except, I do answer to Awn-dray-uh too , b/c half my family is spanish and its the spanish pronuciation, LOL!
It gets under my skin that my DH Nate is a Nathaniel... yet half his family calls him Nathan. Huh?

this is kind of silly but I wish people realized that I kept my maiden name and am not a Mrs. I don't know why, but being called Mrs makes me cringe.
I guess it's hard for people to realize this b/c DH and I have the same last name.:giggle:
Charla
12-06-2007, 01:22 PM
 Mimi. You should have hyphenated :giggle:
Yvette, I've always said it right!!! :)I never would have thought of saying Yuh-vette.
Christine, I'm the same way. Our favorite nickname for Jasmine is "Kewpie" (she used to look just like a kewpie doll) I'm fine with people giving me nicknames, just be creative about it  I was "Spooks" in high school (just by by best friend's boyfriend,...DH thinks it's b/c I'm so pale)

On the subject of the kids names, DH's family always addresses my oldests mail to him as Thomas James III, which he is not. DH is Thomas Robert and while his father & grandfather were both Thomas James, we didn't name him directly after them, the James also came from my side of the family. But they always address his birthday cards (when they decide to acknowledge them) to TJ III.
Now on the subject of my DH's fathers side of the family says that since DH's father has passed (it's been awhile, 12+ years I think) that my DH and his sister are not true "Bommaritos". Though DH is the only one with children that will carry on the family name. lol I don't want to sound petty about it, it's a long story and i won't bore anyone, but I dislike that they think DH and his sister aren't entitled to any family heirlooms or anything.
Anyway...great thread - needed to get that off my chest before we go up there and see everyone for the holidays. lol

Kimbery, I understand you hating "Kimmie". I have nothing to do with the name and that gets under my skin too!
My name's not that hard to pronounce (Mikkel...rhyme with Michelle) but I always get My-kel, sometimes Mickel (like nickel...which I DESPISE). People always think they're being so funny or clever too and sorry, but I've heard it before! LOL.
Some people call me Mickey like it's so original too (which it's not) and I don't like that...don't like "Mik" either. One of my friends calls me that and it's fine but that's IT!
My nickname is actually Kelly or Kel but if someone doesn't know me that well and calls me that I get really uncomfortable! Only my family and best friends call me that!

I don't mind nicknames or the shortening of names. As long as no one minds.
When dd, Zoie was really little and starting to talk she would call ds, Jeremy Gee. And now she calls him Jerm. I catch myself calling him that too. I also call her Zo sometimes.
Zoie gets away with calling her cousin Rebecca Becca, which Rebecca does NOT let anyone call her that. She corrects them too but not Zoie.

Hey me too! Except, I do answer to Awn-dray-uh too , b/c half my family is spanish and its the spanish pronuciation, LOL!
Thank goodness. I wasn't even thinking when I wrote that - some other Andrea's might say it the 'hoity-toity' way. Geez I can be such a horses $%^ sometimes! My mom is the only one to use the spanish pronunciation with me and I don't mind it.
I really hate when someone I don't know at all calls me by my name at all. Like when you are at a trade show and you are wearing a name tag and the salesperson, trying to make a connection with you, keep saying your first name. That totally irks me!
Just had to use this guy -----> :pool1: dang he's cute!

I hate wearing a nametag too. It feels like they're invading my privacy if they actually say it when they don't know me!

Okay well I'm going to chime in as well...
My daughters name is Livia L-I-V-I-A....no "O", but everyone insists on putting the "O" there because that is the most common. Drives me crazy.
And then there's my name - I am not Lee. One of my very closest friends calls me that, I guess the same way that I shorten her name, but I can't stand being called Lee.
It's Lee-aaahh. hehe
Phewwwww...that felt good! Oh and by the way, but husbands name is Marc-O, not Mark.
Okay there I'm done! :)
Thanks - this was good!

ugh...the whole name tag thing. just recently they decided that we would all start wearing name tags at church. when you enter the sanctuary, there is a greeter with a lap top & a dymo printer in the vestibule. you "check in" and get your name tag before proceeding to the service. just plain weird to me. i'm all for getting a good attendance count and for everyone knowing each other's names, but geez....just a little too "official" for me!

I know - geez - what is it about people shortening names????
Matthew is Matthew - not Matt. Now - he is Doodle or Peanut and Ryan calls him Math.
Ryan is shortened to Ry sometimes... but just sometimes.
My name hasn't been shortened ever, everyone always called me Michelle. Well, now that I think about it, there was a brief period when I was Mickey in HS. A very brief period.
DH is Michael to me, but most call him Mike. I always use Michael. And it's Michael John when he's in trouble - LOL!
Yvette - I've mispronounced your name in my head for forever, so forgive me and I'll work at getting it right in my head - LOL!
And Mikkel - is it said just like my name? For I've misprounced your name in my head then too - LOL!
And LOL, Mimi - same last name? Your maiden and his? That's pretty cool!

Something I wish everyone knew about me....
I am NOT as great a photographer as some may think. I still struggle with technical stuff, post processing, and get color casts.... In fact, I had just applied to an exclusive forum with other pro-photogs... and based on my work, I was rejected.
I'm disheartened, but now at least I know my weaknesses.
Angela

My name is NOT Angie.
There are a SELECT FEW who I will allow to call me Angie. I go by Angela or Ang.
The only people who call me Angie and get away with it are
1) my aunts and uncles (since they've done it since I was born)
2) some of the old guys at the bow club. They're like family to me, so I don't cuss them out for it.
My dad called me Angeleener. That was allowed. :)
Another thing:
Just because I'm female does NOT mean I know nothing about archery. I hate it how at the club the men are looked upon as knowing more because they're male. I shoot the pants off most of the men there anyway. Bah.
Ok...I'm done...for now....:break_everything:

This is so much fun!!
Andrea, I'm so sorry about the photography forum. I think you take gorgeous photos (you have an incredible eye) :)
Angela, their eyes must get big when they see you shoot after assuming you can't do it! It's not exactly the same, but guys are usually surprised to find out I actually know what's what in baseball, since I am such a girly-girl. :D

And Mikkel - is it said just like my name? For I've misprounced your name in my head then too - LOL!
Haha -
No, no - not just like your name. It just RHYMES with Michelle :-) I don't know if this helps or confuses you more but it's sort of like Mi-Kel but NOT My-kel because it's not My-shell for Michelle. Does that make sense? That's why I say it rhymes with Michelle.
When I get married to my boyfriend my name will rhyme too - Mikkel Surrell....
So sad...ROFL I'll be like a character from a Dr. Suess book! So I think I'll at least go by Mikkel Paige Surrell (first, middle, last). It'll ease the pain. LOL.

Talking name pet peeves. My son is Benjamin. He prefers to go by Ben. His father and I occasionally call him Benji in a lovey moment. But I just can NOT BEAR when his great grandfather calls him Benny. Ugh...I think Benny Hill every time. And it just drives Ben nuts, too. But the fella is in his nineties and nearly completely deaf and it is just not worth it to remind him that we don't call him Benny every single time we see him! :p
I've gotten pretty thick-skinned about my name. Before I was married, my name was Angelina Cantolina. If you don't think I took some harrassment (as well as cleverly re-vamped camp songs) for that name, then you've never been in fifth grade! I used to insist on being called Ang or Angelina. I got annoyed when people called me Angela, mostly because it just wasn't my name. And, I thought Angie sounded too cute.
Nowadays, I introduce myself as Angelina, but tell people that if they don't feel like using my full name, feel free to call me whatever they want, as long as it's not late for lunch, bwahahaha...
A big one at school is that a LOT of the kids can't pronounce my last name (even 3 year old dd says it wrong). So, they end up calling me Mrs. Shorts. The best was when a parent came to tell me that her son told her that he always remembers my name (the incorrect version, bwahaha) because my name is SHORTS and I'm really SHORT for a grown-up!
