I love my printer, but it is nothing special. I have an HP All-in-one. It uses Vivera (HP) inks, so I only have to replace one at a time, which is pretty economical. I bought it a couple of years ago for about $200, so I'm sure it is cheaper today.
My paper is wonderful. I use Epson Premium Presentation Matte Photo paper. Amazing stuff, and not very expensive. I buy mine from a local camera shop (so, small town, small business, more expensive), and it costs about $18 for 50 sheets. That comes out to .36 cents a sheet. I'm good with that.
Your paper makes ALL the difference. Trust me on this!!

My all-time favorite paper is the double-sided matte photo paper from Staples. Have to agree with Kel that good quality paper is worth the cost!

Depending on what project I'm making I sometimes actually get things printed as pictures through my photo processor. I have a lazer printer so printing on photo paper doesn't work out too well. There have been projects that I just print on regular paper and turn out great. Ultimately it depends on the things you're planning to create with your printed things. Good luck experimenting!

I could have written this....I also use an HP all-in-one I bought at CostCo about 3 yrs ago that uses Vivera ink and I LOVE it!!! I typically print on the OfficeMax brand double-sided matte presentation paper simply because I don't have another choice for shopping locally and the difference in cost for me is about $7 between the Officemax brand ($18 for 50 sheets) and the Epson ($25 for 50 sheets) - but it is way cheaper on the mainland and if the Epson was $18 here, I'd be buying that!!!!
