O.k, now I know that when you open a photo and drop it onto a 300dpi background, the photo's resolution (and therefore size) automatically changes to 300dpi also. Obviously if the photo is then enlarged considerably, it will lose quality, but is it possible to enlarge the picture slightly without it losing visible quality? Or should it ideally be kept at the same size as it initially appears on the layout when you first paste it there? What about making the photo smaller using the free transform handles - does this diminish the quality in any way?

if you ask this question in the software section of the forums that you use, you'll probably get an answer that will help you better on how to do it.

If you're using PSE 3 or 4 or Photoshop CS or CS2 you can enlarge quite a bit without losing image quality. Enlarge the photo BEFORE you drop it into your layout. Use Image > Resize in PSE or Image > Size in Photoshop and choose the Bicubic Smoother option next to Resample Image.

There's actually an exercise in my book about this. ;D
