Jasmine was happily playing on the trampoline last night. She jumped (a normal jump; nothing out-of-the-ordinary) and when she landed, she SCREAMED.
Something happened to her right knee when she landed.
We don't know what...we don't know at this point what's wrong. We brought her home and decided to see how it looked in the morning before taking her in for X-rays or anything.
She won't/can't walk on it. She cried all night long; I think it woke her up whenever she moved her leg in her sleep.
DH is taking her to the dentist for 2 fillings right now, and afterwards will take her to the hospital for X-rays.
Please pray that the pain goes away, and that she'll recover very quickly. I want my happy girl back!
(if the X-rays are clear, we'll take her to the chiro to have him check her out, since he was able to find things wrong with Bekah's wrist that didn't show up on X-ray)

ouch! Poor kiddo! I hope that she just landed funny on it and that it's sore and not damaged in some way!

oh i hope she's OK .. i tore my ACL (a ligament in my knee) jumping on the trampoline ... it required surgery :( hopefully that's not what happened with her ... but if it is, i can answer some questions (although mine was a long time ago - the surgery is much improved now!) ...
and you don't see ligament/tendon problems w/ x-rays -- they usually send you to an orthopedic surgeon who determines the problem ....
good luck!!

Dana, that's what we're trying to figure out. Can they do an MRI to find that out? Is there any reason to go to the ER then, or should we go another route?
I'm praying that it's not torn...that would be horrible
Thanks, everyone. We all need those prayers!

Thanks, Elaine!
Update: we're taking her to the family doctor at 1:30 (when they get back from lunch) and we'll see what they say.
She's really subdued, but that's not a big surprise, with a lousy night of sleep, pain in her knee and novocaine in her mouth from getting fillings! Poor baby!!

poor thing! Is it really swollen? Or hot to the touch?

Oh my goodness, your poor little one. She's in my thoughts. Hope she heals up quickly.
Charla

No, it's not really swollen but it is a bit hot to the touch (then again, she just seems to be hot, so I'm not sure about that one).
I'm so worried :(

Hot to the touch signals inflammation, so that would be expected. Knees are funky. Hang in there!

Thanks!
They just left for the doctor, so hopefully we'll have some clue what's going on soon.

Doctor thinks she's likely ok. The sides don't hurt, just above the kneecap. She thought it would be a good idea to get an xray just to be sure, so they're on their way there now. (wow, fit all three there/their/they're into one sentence :rotfl:)
And though she still isn't walking, she was able to support her weight while they weighed her. So that's good, too.

awww...poor honey :( keep us posted on what the xrays show.

it is fractured
I can't believe it. She didn't do anything unusual in that jump. It wasn't higher than normal or anything.
So they'll be at the hospital for a few hours, and they'll set it, either in a cast or a splint. they have her in a wheelchair right now, and DH said she's trying to steer that around, so she sounds in reasonable spirits.

Geez Louise.
I know Daniel fractured his arm playing around in the living room. It was just a green stick fracture (which is kind of like bending a green stick and it just kind of splinters on one side and then bends) and he was in a cast for 3 weeks). I thought he was just being dramatic at first, and when the doctor saw him she didn't think it was broken. But xray showed otherwise. I felt horrible that we had to wait to get a cast on it. He was miserable.
So I totally feel for ya, girl. It's hard to believe something so simple can hurt them when we spend our lives trying to protect them.
Big hugs and lots of prayers for her, you, the family . . . .

hey charla - just got back home from being out all day ... (so i didn't respond to your PM yet ... ) ... so sorry to hear that it's fractured! but, i guess that's better than something requiring surgery ... not fun for a kid at all though ... although when i broke my wrist in 3rd grade i thought getting people to sign my cast was the best ! LOL !
hope she's feeling OK and in good spirits!! (((((hugs)))) to you all!

As a mother, I can feel your heart ache in your words. Hugs to you Mama.
Don't worry, kids are resilient and she'll be back to her old self in no time.

oh no! Is it the bone above the knee (the femur) or the kneecap itself? I've never heard of someone fracturing a kneecap. Poor thing. Will she be in a full length cast? Will they make her use the wheelchair for a while until she can switch to one of those moonboot things? She's probably too young to negotiate around on crutches.
Charla
07-29-2009, 05:36 PM
Thanks!!
Sinead, I don't know. Josh didn't give me details...just that it's fractured and she's currently using a wheelchair in the hospital room. Not sure if that means we're going to be pushing her around for the next few weeks...
I'd imagine it's the femur. I've never heard of the kneecap breaking either, and since it hurt her "above" the knee (i.e. on her upper leg) then it's likely the femur, just close to the knee.
I'm still in shock

It's not totally uncommon to fracture the patella. Sudden contraction of the large thigh muscles can put large amounts of stress on the patella tendon, resulting in a fracture, or pulling the tendon off the patella itself. Hugs to you and your little one. At least kids heal fast, and hopefully she'll keep in good spirits through this new adventure.
Charla

So it is the femur. DH said she's in a full-leg cast and will be in it for 4-6 weeks (no walking on it) and then she should be fine.
They re-x-rayed it to make sure they'd found all the broken area, since they'd been concentrating on the knee the first time they x-rayed it.
I want this day to END!!~! I wnat my baby girl home@
sorry, very distraught baby is disrupting my typing...better tend to him now.

oh, Charla, I can't believe how long all of this has taken. I know it has to have been hard to have been at home with the other two while your first baby has been hurting and at the hospital all freakin' day. (((((hugs))))) I hope that she gets some sleep tonight and that she adjusts ok to the cast. Prayers for you guys.

Charla we'll continue to pray here for quick healing as well. Hope she settled in ok and that you will all adjust to this real soon.
How old is Jasmine? Ds had a green stick fracture just above his right elbow on his 2nd birthday. Healed in only a couple of weeks. DD fractured her ankle on the trampoline at about 7 yo and was in a cast for a few weeks. It healed fairly quickly too.
Her and DH were jumping and he hit the trampoline just before she did, so the thing was tight stretched, with no give, and her growth plate and ligaments in the foot separated and it fractured one of the bones. The funny bit was Dh kept saying she'll be ok, she just twisted it, she can sleep it off tonight. All the time I am saying it was fractured because I had fractured both my ankles at separate times as a kid and knew what it looked like. Anyway the next day she was all swollen and he took her to the doc. I told you so was mentioned. :)

Thank you all :flirty: I'm so thankful for all the prayers!
She is doing SO much better this morning. She cried in her sleep at 2 (when the Morphine had worn off, most likely) so I gave her some Motrin. She didn't cry again after that, and today she says it doesn't hurt.
And we have our girl back. She's acting Jasmine-like again, which is HUGE.
Sharyn, she's 4. Unfortunately it's not a green fracture...it's a "telescope fracture." Josh said he didn't think that sounded too bad until they showed him the x-ray . He said it was really bad, but thankfully not bad enough that they needed to put a rod in it (which was a possibility, I guess).
(moms really do know, don't we? I knew when he came home and said the doctor thought she was fine, that that couldn't possibly be it. I knew there was something more serious wrong, though I prayed that I was wrong).
So more details: she has a full leg cast for 4-6 weeks. They'll x-ray it in a week to make sure it's healing properly, and then again 3 weeks later. If that one shows that it's healed, they'll remove the cast, otherwise they'll give it 2 more weeks.
They didn't send her home in a wheelchair or anything....so she's living on the couch and carried around when she needs things.
She doesn't want me to take her picture, but she can't run away, so closing her eyes was the next-best option. Thus the scrunched-up face ;)

Oh, poor baby! I didn't get a chance to follow this thread this week, but when I saw your GB layout, I knew it was broken. I hope she's feeling okay! At least she's got herself a cool pink cast! :D
