THe needles aren't bad, Chloe. I did the injections training because we were going to do IUI (never ended up doing it), and they weren't bad at all. I also have to inject myself twice a week (Enbrel--arthritis drug) and it doesn't hurt at all. I'm doing subcutaneous injections. Sometimes it stings a bit, but there are ways to get around that. For my meds (you have to check if you can do this with yours), I put an ice pack on the injection site and let the meds warm up to room temp. When the area is numb and the meds are a bit warm (10-15 min), I pinch the injection site and insert the needle at a 45 degree angle and press the plunger slowly. No (or minimal) pain!

Great tip about the ice pack, Sinead, didn't thought about it! My doc made me a prescription to have a nurse come to make the injections every evening! (And I won't have to pay since anything related to the treatement is covered by our "social security"... Yay for French health insurance system!!!) Good thing, 'cause I don't think I'd have the nerves to do it myself! Yeah, I'm chicken like that! LOL I've been giving blood regularly for 10 years but still can't watch when the needle is in my arm, so putting it in my tummy by myself... no way!!!
Thanks Rae! ;)

Oh, these needles are WAY smaller than the ones they use for giving blood. Yay about the nurse coming! That's great!

the subQ needles are a very fine needle. and if you pinch the skin you really won't feel the tiny needle. after you do it a few times, you won't think twice. here in the US, most home health will only pay for nurses to come in to give the injection if the patient can't do it (physically, not mentally LOL) or if there is no one (family, friend, etc) who can be trained to give it. we do subQ injections at a 90 degree angle and almost like a dart stab - if you do it slow and at a different angle, it will pinch and burn more.
but it's great that you can have someone to come in to do it for you. sometimes I am amazed and appalled at what our health care systems expect of patients who return home from surgery and from their families (taking care of injections, wounds, etc.)

Yeah, the french health care system is by far not perfect, but without it I wouldn't be able to get this treatement. Just this cycle of meds is 1/3 of my monthly salary... and that doesn't even cover the insemination itself and all the exams. Usually we have to pay 30% of the total and then our private additional insural (if we have one) pay that part back, but with infertility (and several other "long term affections" like diabete, cancer, etc.) the insurance pay all of it, I have no money to advance! Pfew!!!

Best of luck, Chloe! We had to do that as well and it worked the first try and I'm praying for the same for you!
