Look what my mum and I created last weekend. Nappy cakes! (Or diaper cakes if that's what you call them). One is for a family friend who delivered her baby girl when she was just 6 months pregnant. Baby is finally out of hospital now (and doing well), so she at last gets to have a baby shower. The other is for my cousin who is expecting her first baby (a boy) on August 1st.

I am soooooooooo stoked with how these turned out. We couldn't find any nice ribbons, so I said why don't we go buy some fabric and sew our own ribbons? I know....ME sewing! Who'd believe it  I think I'll continue to do it this way every time now. The fabric really gives it an extra something.

The fabric on this one says "Save the Planet", "Go Green", "Recycle" etc. My cousin is very much into that kind of thing.

We kept them pretty simple. Nappy cakes are not common over here, so I don't think it would matter how we decorated them - everyone will be stoked anyway.

I LOVE the recycled version of the cake!! the turquoise and green are fabulous together!!

Cait - you roll each diaper and secure it with a rubber band. google diaper cake and you'll find a ton of different ways to make them!

The cake itself is made up of disposable nappies. Each is individually rolled up and tied with a rubber band. Bunch enough of them together and tie with a wide ribbon or fabric band like I have. Make each consecutive layer smaller. I put an empty paper towel tube down the center to give it stability. Some people use a bottle of wine. Decorate as you wish. Google nappy cake or diaper cake images and a ton of them will show up.

super cute, Jacinda! The last time I made one of these I spent a fortune, though. That many diapers are expensive! ;)

They look great! I received a diaper cake from some ladies in my office when I was pregnant with DS, the bottom 2 layers were all diapers, then the top layer was a round paper mache box full of shampoo, lotion, baby powder type stuff. They tied little toys and soothers, baby combs and washclothes around the outer layers instead of the flowers (very pretty btw!).

Wow! That looks fantastic! I think the fabric bows are better than the ones I've seen! Great job!

Jacinda, these are gorgeous! I LOVE the idea of using fabric to make the ribbons! It takes the cake from "cute" to "holy crap - that's amazing!", lol!

Well I just got back from the 'girl' baby shower. Everyone ooh'd and ahh'd over the bird nappy cake. I don't think anyone had ever seen one before. The new mum loved it, and my mum and I came away feeling very happy we'd gone to the effort to make it for her.

Thanks, Jacinda! I was really happy with how it came out.

so guess what they had as centerpieces at every table????

:thud:

Mine was definitely prettier than theirs; theirs were much more utilitarian. But still!!!!
