View Full Version : What do you take on your holiday?
What do you take on your holiday scrapping wise and photography wise?
Do you take your laptop with you with goodies/ photo's to scrap or do you stay away from it during your holiday?
And what camera gear do you take with you? Do you take all of it with you or just the body and one lens?
Do you aim for snapshots ( so the camera is in p-mode) or do you always try to take technical photo's ( meaning you shoot manual)?
I am really interested to hear what you do. I can't figure out for myself what to take and how to approache my photography during my holiday :)

I take my laptop, but I don't normally get a chance to do scrapping, mainly as the laptop gets used for DVDs once the kiddo's have gone to bed. I guess I'll get even less chance as they get older. I mainly have the laptop so that I can copy my photos over from the camera. Less chance of losing them. I also try to spend a bit of time going through and deleting the blurry ones/ excessive duplicates and developing from RAW.
Camera wise, I take the DSLR unless I know that we're going to be mostly cycling or doing something else where I don't want to take it. I take my 18-70mm kit lens and my 50mm prime but I'll often leave one of those hidden away in the car depending on what we're doing. Not a huge fan of fiddling around switching lenses tbh but if we're out for the whole day and I know there'll be photo opps in shady woodland as well as some sweeping views I'll take both.
I pretty much always shoot in aperture or shutter priority mode, I'll switch to manual for difficult scenery shots occasionally. I'm not an expert photographer by any standard but I like to get the best photos I can without going nuts over it and missing out on the fun! I do enjoy getting nice shots though, so taking the kit to places I can take pretty photos is part of the fun!

I usually just take my camera and one every day lens. If I have time, I'll try to set up a couple nice technical shots but mostly end up with candids and snapshots that usually capture the memories of the vacation.
I ALWAYS take my laptop. I like to scrap photos when they are fresh - sometimes by the time I get home I have all but photos from the last couple days of the trip scrapped! Since DS is just 2, we are limited in what evening activities we can do, so usually we're hanging out in the room relaxing and I have time to scrap. I'm terrible about jotting down journaling notes, too, so scrapping when it's fresh is essential for me! :)

I've started leaving the laptop home. I like not having the temptation ;)
I bring my dSLR and last time just brought my 18-75mm lens. At that point I was only shooting in aperture priority, so I'm not sure if that will change now that I'm shooting in Manual most of the time. I'll likely shoot in A unless I really need to override it or have time for a more "artsy" shot :)
and am considering next time we go somewhere with great scenery, renting a wide-angle for scenery shots. not sure, though...I might be too nervous to travel with a rented lens :hiding:

Take it all. :teehee:
We usually travel for 5 weeks plus so I need it to stay in touch and upload my photos to. I take the dsrl camera, a 50m prime lens and a 70 -200. Plus the point n shoot chuck in the handbag one. The kids often use that one and we have some wonderful and very memorable shots come out of that thing taken by them.

Actually - Sharyn's reminded me. We do take the P&S as well. Dh is in charge of that (so there aren't normally many photos, lol!) but it's mainly for videos. I'm not one for hours of 'proper' holiday film but I love the little snippets we get. Like the girls dancing round the great hall of a castle last year :) and stopping occasionally to pretend to change the CD!

I don't have a laptop personally... when we hit Italy last year we took Chris' work one... and I lugged my camera and lenses with me! Taking a mix of happy snappys and some fairly thought about shots... well thought about in the sense that hubby doesn't stand round waiting for too long so I kinda have to pull finger and just do it!

Next year with France is gonna be interesting I have to say... now that we have two dslr's (one each), a variety of lenses... one p&S and will probably have to get another for the other child... yeah we take a lot of photos! So normally I will add several usb drives to the mix as well... saving images to them as well! oh and don't forget the myriad of chargers needed to keep all the batteries charged...
Can you imagine the looks we get going through airport security?!?!?!?
for me its worth the strain though... our Italian trip I ended up with four 23 page "digiscrapped" books... memories like that last a lifetime!
