Welcome to the newly revamped TDC Challenges and Workshops! This month, we'll be bringing back some of your favorite TDC Challenges, plus a few new ones that we think you'll enjoy. You will have all month to complete these challenges and earn your points, so no pressure there. ;) We are also going to offer a month-long Workshop challenge where the projects that we complete are a bit more detailed than in a traditional challenge. All in all, we're super excited and we're hoping that you will be, too!

For our first month-long workshop under this new system, we are going to reprise a popular challenge from 2009. Some of you may have been here with us for that challenge, but don't worry! We've added some extra wrinkles to this challenge for you. :) On to the Workshop!


Did you know that July 1 marked the halfway point of 2011? Remember those New Year's Resolutions that you made last December? How are you doing on them? Did you stick to them, determined to succeed this year? Are you still hanging in there as strong as ever? I'm not, and I bet I'm not alone. Once again this year, I resolved to make some changes in my eating, which would hopefully result in changes in my body composition. I was doing pretty good for the first month or so, but I fizzled out fairly quickly when life threw some curves my way. Am I ready to write this year off and give up completely, only to start fresh with 2012's Resolutions? No way!! I might have lost half the year, but I've still got almost the whole second half of the year left!

So that's where this workshop comes in. In order to succeed, I need a reminder of what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. Back in 2009, this same need prompted a workshop that created a Motivation Album. While that album still evokes motivation for me, I think I need a little bit more. This time around, I'm going to add a journaling component that will hopefully help me with the reminders of why I'm doing this and what I hope to gain.

This month, I will give you a tutorial on creating a paper bag album that will eventually be the home for your Motivational album. Then I have a selection of motivational quotes that I hope will help you get ready to conquer your resolutions (or keep you on track, anyway!) for once and for all. I'm so excited to share in this journey with you, and I can't wait to see what you come up with! You can, of course, do this project completely digitally, but I wanted to offer the hybrid version as well, in case you wanted something that you could put into your purse or keep in your car where you might need the most reminders of what you're working toward. :)

I'm so excited about having new album pages with journaling on them, and I can't wait to get this project done!

Each week, I will add a new post with another couple of motivational quotes for you to use. There are twelve quotes in all, so you will get several assignments each week. I will keep a linked list of those posts here in this first thread so that you can easily find the pieces you will need to complete your album. :)

You made it past that marathon first post! I'm excited! :D

Let's get started on this album!

The first step for me will be to create the paperbag album that I will eventually attach each page to. You don't have to do a paperbag album; you can do a fully digital album, you can do a flip album, you can do it any way that you want to! I just thought that a paperbag album might be a good simple technique to start with, so that's what I'll be showing you today.

This album is really pretty simple. First, you need to figure out how many pages you'll need. For this album, I am giving you 12 quotes. I'm also going to challenge you to do two other layouts. That gives you 14 pages in all, which means that you will need 4 paperbags if you're going to follow this technique.

Easy, right? The fun thing with these is that you can also add a tag or a journaling page into the pocket between the pages. :) Or maybe you could add your updated stats to little journaling pages that you put into the pockets; whatever you can think of that will help you keep yourself motivated and moving forward. :)

In addition to the paperbag album assembly, I've got a couple of other assignments for you this week. The first thing that I want you to do is to create a layout that focuses on a "Dear John" letter. This "Dear John" letter will address whatever issue it is that you are trying to get motivated to conquer. My "Dear John" letter is a "Dear Fat" letter because I'm on a weight loss journey. What will yours be?

I think that it can be helpful to identify an opponent when you're entering a challenge. For me, my opponent is the fat that I carry around every day--the fat that keeps me from doing and being some of the things that I really want to be. For you, this opponent might be anxiety or it might be fear or it might be procrastination. We do all sorts of things to get into our own way, don't we? What thing is standing in your way right now?

Now I can't wait to see what you do with this prompt. Really try to be honest with your journaling. This will be on the inside cover of your album, so hopefully it will help you remember why you are doing this.

Neat idea! Think I'll be jumping in too. Not sure I'll make a paper bag album, as I have an album here that would work perfectly, but I love the idea of that too...may have to try it some other time. :)

LuAnn, I'll have to get back to my laptop to get the exact dimensions of my pages, but they're a little smaller than the paper bag "page". I have just been running them through my Xyron machine and making them into a sticker and putting them on that way. ;) Easy peasy. I'll be back home tomorrow, though, and can get you the dimensions then.

Laina, I realized that I needed to clarify the points thing for this workshop. Sorry about that. You can earn 1 point for each part that you complete for this challenge. There will be an opening and closing layout, plus 12 quotes to journal about, so that would be about 14 points if you do each bit. :D

I'm excited that you're excited! I can't wait to see what you do!

Lorry, you can use any sort of album. I can search up a couple of different kinds of albums for you if you'd like. A little folio album would work well, too.

how about using an old baby board book (the ones with the hard chipboard pages that are usually about 10 pages long?) - just make sure you sand the book pages so that your papers will glue (and stay glued!) to the the book.

I had never seen it before till I was out at a scrapbook store w/ Sharyn, but you can even make a little album out of toilet paper rolls! Everybody's got those, right?? :giggle:

I used white paper bags cause that's what I had on hand, but the pages are really thin. It'll be fine, but brown paper would've been better I think.

Oh, I made one of those toilet paper rolls album!! It was fun, but the pages are a bit too small for a journaling-centered album like this one!

Ok, I'm back home. :)

LuAnn, my paper bag album pages are made with traditional lunch sack paper bags, and my pages are 5.25x5. They're a bit smaller than the actual paper bag pages themselves.

I did notice last year, though, that different brands of bags are different sizes, so that's why we started with the album this time instead of waiting til the end (like last time). I think that the white paper bags are also smaller than the brown ones usually are, too. :)

I'm going to post some of the quotes this week so that you can start on those journaling pages. I won't make you wait until Friday! :D

As I have mentioned before, my goals here are focusing on losing weight, and I found this quote funny but quite true as well. Even this summer, in my efforts to get healthy, I joined the YMCA and got involved in some of their exercise classes (Zumba!). I was doing great until I got sidetracked by swimming lessons for my girls (which occurred at the same time as the classes and required my presence). Now I'm out of the Zumba zone again and will feel like I'm being run over by a truck when I try to rejoin the class. Rejoin I will, though! I am not going to let looking stupid stand in my way of taking my life back. ;)

How about you? Do you ever feel like you're stalled out on the right track? How can you get yourself going again?

Great layouts, ladies! I love what you have done so far!

On a personal note, let me just say, WOW. I have really been sidetracked by this surgery and am desperately in need of the very motivation that I'm seeking in this album. What providential timing! Any surgery is a big deal, but wow, this one is taking much more time to heal from than others (c-sections) that I've had. I guess I forgot to factor in the reality that I use my hand ALL the time and also that hand surgery deals with nerves and more intricate motor control compared to the big incision of muscle and fat in a c-section. Even now, a week later, I'm still on pain meds and barely able to use my right hand...mostly hunting and pecking here! So I'm so very sorry that I've been MIA this last week and that I don't have samples of my pages to show you. I'm really hoping that things will improve in a huge way for me this next week so that I can get back on track and finish this thing strong!

With that said, let's move forward with more quotes for you! This first one is particularly apropros for me this week. ;)

What are the "parking places" that are tempting for you? Have you gotten to a place where you feel content about your progress so far and you're tempted to stop now, just short of your goal? How will you fight against this temptation and keep pushing, even through that contentment?

This one is from my dad. This is the credo that he lives by and what he's encouraged me to live up to for my whole life. When the chips are down and I'm feeling the pressure or when I'm tempted to give up, I can hear his voice urging me on, encouraging me to push just a little harder and try just a little longer. :) Do you have somebody like that in your life, either physically in your life or in your memories? How does this influence help you and encourage you to keep at it?

It's crunch time--the proverbial 4th quarter with the score tied and only seconds to make the play and win the game for the home team. The ball is in your court, so what will you do? How will you push hard now to reach your goal and make your goal, your dream, a reality? :)

You guys, I'm going to amend the deadline for this since my surgery threw me off my game and my timing. Please check the first post, but know that you'll have a little extra time to finish this off.

I'm also going to post more prompts, but if you've completed all of them so far, then you have enough to have "completed" the challenge. Sound fair? :D
