saw this post and thought I'd add my 2 cents worth - i have two fave type fonts atm - they are problem secretary and kingthings trypewrite (no spell error that's how it lists in my PSCS2 font selector pull down thing) - not sure where they are from but if you do a font search, they should turn up.

If you want a bit of a quirky one, I love "my type of font".

Try this site http://desktoppub.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=desktoppub&zu=http%3A%2F%2Foldtype.8m.com%2F

Also one of my favorites is called Adler. If you google it, I'm sure you'll find it

I really like "My Own Topher"

http://www.abstractfonts.com/search/my%2520own%2520topher

It isn't a "messy" font. :)
