What is the average WPM typed? Or what is considered fast? I have always been told I am a fast typer... people have actually come over to watch me type at work because they are amazed. I only use my 2 index fingers, too. Crazy, huh? Anyway, I played one of the kid's games this afternoon and was surprised at how low my numbers came up. (I scored anywhere from 45-63 WPM.) I am guessing part of it could be because I had to type specific words rather than just my own throughts which obviously flow faster!?

I was at 90 in junior high school on an old electric typewriter. I'd guess I'm at least that now, but don't know. Maybe I need to find a test...
ETA: Found a test, I'm around 75, actually :) .

Last time I was forced to take a typing test (some agency with administrative assistant jobs) I was between 75-90 words per minute. I think 45 wpm is pretty average.

So I'm bored, and just did this very quick test:
http://www.calculatorcat.com/typing_test/ and scored 84 wpm.
Forget my college degree, I think the typing class I took in high school probably contributed the most to my success now (as a reporter)! But one of my co-workers just retired after 35 years, and he still typed with 2 fingers.

Hmmmmmmm, it sounds like the children's game must be off then...... I can't be that slow and still be the "work freak show", lol :)

I scored 77 but that seems low to me. I type all day and I think I'm really around 100wpm.

I took 1 sememster of typing class in HS, but really didn't need it. During those tests (most were 5 minute quick tests and you could not make more than 5 mistakes....for the longer tests you still had to stay w/in 1 error per min) I was over 100+ wpm. I have to say that's probably ALL due to being a pianist lol.
I just took that on-line test and it showed 92 wpm. I wouldn't even really consider that a true test for speed...that test is way too short.
You could make your own test if you are way bored lol. Find an encyclopedia or some other text to copy in your word processor. Set a timer for 5 minutes and type away. There's a way in WORD to check the number of characters (and maybe even words) in the selection...and of course it has spell-check. You can divide the number of characters by 5 to estimate the number or words.

I was thinking that I was around 75 in high school, but the test just said I scored 90 wpm.

I scored 85, but my problem is that I made a couple of typos which I caught and corrected. Darn editing--that cost me time! lol

I did the same thing Sinead! It's automatic for me to hit backspace when I mess up.:embaresse

The only problem with having Word do the word count for you, is it doesn't take into account whether you used the shift key, and likely not the space bar either, and those both count as keystrokes.
Rachel, if you type with two fingers, that speed would seem really, really fast :D
When I took a test at a temp agency I was at 63, quite a change from the 35 (I think) in my HS typing class. :) I think I'd be quite a bit faster writing my own words than typing something given by someone else :)
