how do you make macaroni and cheese? do you do it from scratch or use the box? if you use the box, do you follow the instructions... 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup milk etc.... Just wondering?

As an adult with no kids in the house, I now call it "Pasta and Cheese"....and we do it by making a white sauce from the Joy of Cooking and adding cheese to the sauce. That way, I can control the flavor and the calories/points of the cheese going into the sauce.

But, when I was younger, Kraft Mac and Cheese was the ONLY mac and cheese that I ate...I was a mac 'n' cheese snob. :) Didn't matter how broke I was, I'd turn my nose up at any generic versions. They just didn't taste the same. :)

Usually just the box stuff, and almost always the generic, i dont totally follow the directions typically. Occasionally i will get the urge for real mac and cheese though and make it mostly from scratch!

i have been thinking about trying the new "SUPER MAC" or whatever it's called... made with whole grain pasta and stuff to make it more healthy. but seriously, how healthy can macaroni and cheese be?

I generally make it from the box, but not necessarily by the directions - it varies widely depending on how much milk and butter I have in the house LOL! I also really, really like a frozen mac and cheese - I can't remember the brand, maybe it's Michellina's, but they have one with shells and jalepenos - brilliant!

I just made some mac & cheese from scratch last night. :) I use the recipe in Betty Crocker's cookbook with minor adjustments to cheese content and removal of dry mustard. Can't stand mustard.

My son is allergic to colorings so I have to make mac'n'cheese from scratch. There was a good recipe in Real Simple Magazine a few months back that calls for adding seasoned bread crumbs to the top and then baking it in the oven for a few minutes. It is YUMMY!

lol... i love to make it from scratch but usually resort to the box out of not wanting to make a huge mess.... and i can never follow the measurement directions for butter and milk... i put some of each in... i can tell you that...

I might make my own mac & cheese, but my boys refuse to eat it. If it's not orange...they want nothing to do with it. And D? He'll only eat the Easy Mac microwave junk. :X-:

If its quick, like for lunch, its Velveeta Shells & Cheese.

If its for dinner, its from scratch, and an old family favorite!!

Macaroni & Cheese

3 c elbow noodle
2 T butter
3 T flour
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 c milk
1 squirt mustard
3 c shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Cook 3 c of noodles. While cooking start on sauce in another pot. Slowly heat 2 1/2 c milk. In microwave, melt 2 T butter. Add flour and salt to butter and stir until smooth. Add mixture to milk. Add mustard. Slowly stir in cheese. Mix noodles and sauce; bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.

When we make it at home, it's typically with hot dogs and I make the Back to Nature brand "Crazy Bugs." Since it's a "natural and organic" product, it actually asks for organic milk (which we use) and organic butter which (which we do not). But I don't measure- I eyeball just about everything with the exception of baking since it's more of a science.

we usually make the velveta shells and cheese (you dont have to add anything to it) and i dont measure the water :tounge_sm

i like the frozen mac and cheese too! stouffers makes a yummy one.

Made from scratch... I also do a white sauce and then throw the cheese in and then mix together, add bread crumbs and a little extra cheese on top and then bake it for a few minutes. I never follow a recipe, so I just wing it... but there always has to be a lot of sharp cheese. :) Mmmmmm...

I usually make it both ways but we LOVE the Kraft stuff from the box and we usually make 2 boxes with 1/4 cup butter and 1/2 cup milk. We also cook peas and mix it into the Mac and Cheese.

My recipe is very similar to Andrea's, minus the mustard.

It is definitely one of the kiddos' faves!

Heck - my kids don't eat Mac n Cheese. I will make the box kind - generic store brand - when I have a hankering or need something to have for lunch fast.
But I get big hankerings for from scratch, baked and all, Betty Crocker, baked in the oven recipe during the winter. Comfort food. It's to hot to entertain the thought of it here in summer - oven would heat the house up too much.
I really like the velvetta shells and cheese - espically the one with brocolli in it - but haven't bought it for awhile. may have to this week! :) Especially after this thread! I am SOOOOOO food suggestive!

I also hang out over at Babycenter, and on my Birthboard, the same question came up! Weird, huh?

I am an out of the box kind of girl... the kids are getting old enough that they make it themselves sometimes now, too! :)
