Alpha stamps

I have a set of letter brushes that I downloaded from SBB. They have a really cool stamped look. Can anyone explain how I get that look (in PSE)? I do know how to "define brush", but I think some filter or effect is used before the were made into brushes to give them a more irregular, stamped feel.

I usually use those messy brushes to erase parts of my fonts after I rasterize them so I can get that distressed and stamped look.

For a more random effect I use the tutorial at escrappers. Ctrl Click the layer you want to look eroded, then go to filter> render clouds. Then I go to filter. add noise. Next I play with the brightness & contrast until I like teh way it looks. I go to Select> color range, and select the blackest parts. I then hit delete. Then define brush.

Hope that makes sense. Works like a charm. You can always play around until you get the look you want. Have fun!
