a spin off of the thread on what did you say that you'd never do, but are doing now. :)
in high school, i wanted to be a photo-journalist. i wanted to travel the world, and work mainly in war torn or third world countries. i was going to win the Pulitzer Prize, have photos in Newsweek and Time, be famous. i even went so far as to major in journalism with a minor in art my first year at college.

The thing I wanted to do was get married. Think now when I look back on it that was my way of escaping my dysfunctional home. I finally decided on becoming a Legal Assistant because I like the law so much.

I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom :)
I toyed with the idea of being a ballerina, but I knew I would be too tall to be in the "corps," so I'd have to go for Prima Ballerina.
I went to school to be a music teacher...and taught for two years...but I'm doing what I always wanted to do :)

When I was really young, I used to watch re-runs of Quincy on tv (after school) and wanted to be a medical examiner. Hahahha. I hate all medical stuff now.
Then in junior high, I wanted to be a teacher. And then a writer. And then a marriage/family therapist (what I went to school for)... and then a head of a non-profit community center... I'm now 36 and can't figure out what I want to be when I grow up. :)

Great topic Tracey :) When I was a kid, I wanted to be a lawyer, but by high school and college I was all over the place - thought about being a doctor, a politician or just an activist of some sort and travel the world. The funny thing is, five years after college, I went back for law school - came full circle!

I wrote this down on the "scroll" we signed at our graduation party (lockdown at the high school all night) for my prediction at 28/10 years HS reunion:
Married
2 Kids
Interpreter for the U N (I was going to major in Political Science and the Japanese language)
At 28, I was:
- not married
- had no kids
- had gotten my college degree (B.A. in English Language and Literature with a minor in Professional Writing) only the year before - i took the LONG road to a degree.

gosh...i toyed around with so many things...
attorney
professor of english literature
writer (which still i dabble in)
interpreter for military intelligence (scary, i know....i tested off the charts for multiple language acquisition, and spoke 3 at the time. looking back on it, i am SO glad to have turned that down...i'd likely be in the middle east somewhere right now!)
so where'd i end up?
with a BA in english lit, minor in spanish, a partially completed MA (3 classes to go!)
and....a sweet little girl that i am blessed to spend every day with, a dog that i adore, a husband that enthusiastically supports me staying at home, and no regrets for not having acheived success in the business world.

Oh - fun thread!
I wanted to be anything but a teacher, since both my parents were. I went to school majoring in Fine Arts (NO idea just What I would have done with that). Ended up in Graphic Arts my 2nd year - mind you no computers then! LOL! I thered how to run a printing press and such. Had worked in "free" want ad papers for most of the time until I where I was working went under the Monday after we found out we were pregnant with Matthew. It was a little early, but we figured oh well, I was going to stay home after we had 2 anyway. Then later we found out Matthew would have DS and have therapys and such and we KNEW I would need to stay home. I do work 1 day a week for a watercolor artist and can work from home some weeks.
Now I find myself looking into the teaching thing. - LOL! I may become a teacher's aide in a few years when Matthew is in school full time. Or I may even become an Early Interventionist to work with kids with diabilities in their 1st 3 years. We'll see!

After all the "normal" dream for little girls (teacher, nurse, vet,...), I decided to be a doctor, and work for "Médecins du monde" (a non profit organisation that sends docs wherever needed) so that I could travel a lot. When I realised that I had to learn for 8 to 10 years before graduating, and that then I couldn't go anywhere before practicing for many other years, I changed my mind for journalism. As Tracey, I wanted to be in the action, in war lands, discovering secret political scandals, that kind of stuff. I never found a job in journalism (and wasn't ready to go to Paris and spend 10 years in low paid jobs before hoping to become a reporter), but I finally found a job in communication (I'm in charge of the PR of my town). The big traveler I was supposed to become no work about 3 minutes away from home (by foot!!) LOL!!

I wanted to be an archeologist or a marine biologist working with sharks. In college I flipped back and forth between English and Psychology majors--I loved literature and writing, but I wanted to work for the FBI and study Criminal Behavior. What did I end up doing? Getting a degree in English, a minor in Psych, and a masters in Secondary Ed. Then I taught high school English until I got married. When we moved to NC, I taught developmental writing at a community college, and now I work as an online writing tutor.
I'm still not sure what I want to do when I grow up, though. :tongwink:

I wanted to be a National Geographic Photographer
A meterologist
an astronmer, I am so bad in math, I knew that science would never be a major of mine.
A singer, and be famous and travel everywhere
An air hostess .. which figures since I was short and suffered from travel sickness. I was devastated when I wrote a paper about it when I was seven and the teacher pointed out these drawbacks!

I always wanted to be a perdiatrician till I got a really bad anatomy & physiology teacher in college (he talked like Forrest Gump and I couldn't pass his class to save my life). Since I went to a small school and had to have that class to continue on in that career field I changed majors.

Hmmmm... I've changed my mind soooo many times! lol! As a little girl I wanted to be a lawyer (not sure why?) and of course in HS it changed. I wanted to be a Medical Examiner/Coroner soooooooo bad! lol! I was determined to be in the medical field. I even went to the coroner's office, got a tour, watched an autopsy and was STILL fascinated enough to consider it! (Too much HBO I guess, lol! I can't remember the show but it was a true life examiner sharing his stories...) THEN I woke up and realized that that was non-realistic since like Tara, I was preg in HS and had a lil boy to worry about. So I decided to take the quick and easy way to getting to the med field and went to a trade school (BIG mistake! Too expensive and they lied - they said my credits were transferable to our JC and they weren't... so by the time I was ready to go sign up, the JC told me NO WAY - I had to start from SCRATCH! grrrr!) I got a job in the ER (which I LOVED) as a CNA. Which I hated since I actually wanted to be an RN. After working graveyard (7pm-7am) for about 3 months, dh asked me to quit b/c he hated seeing me work those hours. I stayed home for a few more months and then I got a job offer from a dentist and thought what the heck? So I worked there for another 3 months doing front and back office. (I learned that I would NEVER be a dentist, lol!) I quit when I found out I was pregnant with dd and have been home ever since. I dream of one day being able to be a full-time graphic designer/photographer. (I think?) lol! I *STILL* have no clue what I want to do! lol!

I can remember on "career day" of Kindergarten that I dressed up as a "teacher" and took my mom's briefcase with me and for a few years of school that's what I thought I wanted. As I got into high school I decided that I wanted to be a psychologist until I went to college and took a college psychology course and kept dozing off from boredom :embaresse I finished out that year of college and didn't go back until ten years later I decided what I really wanted to do with myself ;)

I know when I was in elementary school I wanted to be a Vet. But I think that's a dream of almost every 7 year old! LOL
As I got older I really just wanted to be a wife and mom. I had no dreams to 'be' anything else.

fun question! My 5yo asks me this question all of the time!
When I was younger, I wanted to be a supermodel, lol! I am 5'10" and when I was younger, the "look" was much more wholesome and healthy (the anorexic, heroin chic thing wasn't really big, yet). So, at 15, I took some private lessons, I got to be in a couple of local fashion shows (my *big* one was for Levis, lol), made a little money, and then decided it was too much work, and that I just wanted to have fun. I really regret not sticking with it, not that I think I would have been famous, but because I could have made some money to help pay for my education.
As I got older, I wanted to be an architect. I studied Architecture in college for a couple of years, and got burned out. It just wasn't a family friendly profession (late hours, little sleep, high stress~ not my thing). So I got my education degree, and I am now a SAHM. I am planning on starting my Masters in school counseling soon.
But, in all honesty, (and what I tell my dd) I still don't know what I really want to be when I grow up! I figure I am only 30 (for one more month), so I have plenty of time to decide!!
