turn your flash off!

sure, that sounds simple enough, but I don't think I can. I have a digital canon rebel and I don't know if I can turn it off.. anybody with a canon want to tell me how how if i can?

Yes, with a rebel you certainly can turn it off. My dh has one, although I don't know how to use it.

It sounds like it's time to break out the manual! :)

also, after you turn off your flash, make suer you have a nice steady hand for a low light shot or even better, put your camera on a tripod

First of all, are you using Auto Mode? Auto Mode will sometimes automatically pop up the flash. Try using Program mode or even Manual Mode. Then you can control when the flash goes off. If it pops up, just shut it again. Make sure your exposure is correct for the lighting.

There is a setting in the Auto Mode for no flash. If I were to take this photo - I would also use my 50mm 1.8 and and probably have it open all the way to 1.8 lol. I do also shoot in manual though. Worse comes to worse...I would underexpose it a little and just tweak it in photoshop w/blending modes or actions later.

IMO, under-exposing is better that over-exposing because it's easier to correct/edit afterwards. I take a lot of low-light photos and then tweak them with the 'curves' options.

Taking indoor pictures, esp. in the night/evening, is really tricky. Lots of experiments and practice! When all else fails it helps to accept the fact that life isn't perfect and neither are some of our photos, lol!

My settings for the photo in question were:

Canon 20D
ISO 200
SS 1/25 (VERY tricky to do without a tripod; I got lucky) I've learned how to be as still as I can be
Aperture: f2.5
Lens: 50mm 2.5 Macro

The auto mode without flash is the very last one on the dial... :)

Thanks Marsha.. just what i was looking for. I'm still learning in Manual... most pics come out blurry, even on a tripod. How did you all learn so much about your cameras?
