Blog help please: sizing layout for blog posting

Ok, I finally have a blog! I want to add layouts to it once in awhile. I tried to add one, but it is showing really small. Any suggestions for what size layouts should be for blog posting?

So I'm definitely not the expert on this, but I think it all depends on what format you have your blog set to. I have mine in a two column format at Typepad and just happened to figure out that images 500px wide fit perfectly.

If anyone else has some magical method I would love to hear too -- because right now I am stuck with my two columns, or reformatting all my pics.
