Printing Instagram Photos

Here's some cool info for those who use Instagram, to expand on the following post from this thread a week or two ago:

They are 612 px square with a resolution of 96... so when you put that on a 300ppi layout you end up with roughly a 2 inch square, right? I have to admit there are things about instagram that confuzzle me. I used another site to export and download, so I'm assuming this is the best resolution I can get.

So, I just saw a post on FB today from Persnickety, saying they can print Instagram photos at 4x4 and 5x5. This is a bit bigger than I had thought was possible, and so cool for anyone who's using actual pocket protector pages for PL-type systems and/or everyday scrapping! Especially if you're using any of the pocket pages that are configured for 9 - 4x4 photos (like this one).

Along that same line of thought... has anyone here sent Instagram photos to be printed at 'regular' ol' photo labs (your local Walgreens/Target/Walmart/etc.)? Curious to know if one could send one to be printed on a 4x6 (with some white space on one end) and just cut off the extra 2" at the end, to end up with a 4x4? That would be even more economical than Persnickety (given that you can often get prints from those types of places for less than 10 cents, etc.). Or, does Persnickety have a "special processing secret" that allows them to do 4x4 and 5x5 sizes?

I made a couple 4x6 templates to print instagram that I've been thinking of putting on my blog. Then I took your FB freebie template--I think it was the FB freebie--3x3 grid. Shrunk it to 8x8 inches and put my photos on it to be printed at Costco. I think the size should then fit well on a 3x4 card. We'll see. Need to get all my photos ordered so my mom can get them sent to me. I just keep adding more to the shopping list though.

I cannot imagine how they are making them 4x4 without losing quality... Hmm.

I printed mine at Target--two little pics on one 4x6 document. I love them! They are the perfect size for PL. Everything else, I'll be taking real pics for.

Oh, and my instagram photos are huge. 1936x1936 @72dpi. They save at around 2mb. On 12x12 300dpi they're about 6.5 inches square. I'm using an iPhone 4.

I've actually been VERY impressed with the photos from my phone and have even used some of the shots in our school's yearbook.

Silly question time... um, how are you getting them off your phone? I used Instaport to download mine from Instagram, and they are 612 px square at 72 DPI. And I have an iphone 4s. Which I don't know how to get the photos off of, LOL.

LOL Julie. I think the 4S is supposed to have an even better camera than the 4. If I'm too lazy to plug the phone into the computer, I usually just e-mail the photos to myself. They automatically go into my camera roll and I can get them from there. I don't really do anything with instagram itself, other than taking the photos. I think my account is private.

Same here. I finally DL'd the Instagram app onto my phone today (upgraded to an iPhone over New Years' weekend, after years of holding out, and realized I might as well take advantage of the convenience of the camera/Instagram)... but I made my account private, too, b/c I really don't want to share them w/ the world... I just want to capture them for my scrapbooking/memory-keeping purposes!

I'm so, so, SO VERY EXCITED to hear that you (we) can get them off your (our) phone(s) in such a big file format! I was hoping there was a way to use these photos in layouts at a size larger then 2x2, and to find out there is... well, I am giddy with excitement. And no, it doesn't take a lot to make me giddy with excitement, people. I just spent the entire day breaking up between my 2 kids over our "Francesco Bernouli" racecar (from "CARS")... yes, an entire. frickin. day... and so just about anything happy will make me giddy with excitement right about now! But this was an especially nice surprise.

I email them to myself too - kind of making my instagram photo's - which I also post to fb -as my P365+1 this year. So each day they are posted to me email account then I can just print them out, or will do when I get around to it.

Cause seriously - I have no idea how to get the darn photo's off my iphone (only a 3gs).

I wonder if you grabbed them off your iPod directly to your computer, if you'd get a higher resolution/bigger image? For my iPod Touch (which I used exclusively until I got the iPhone a few weeks ago), I could open it up in "My Computer" and view the files... and I could grab/delete photos from there. Or even through the interface with iTunes, too. But I never used Instagram w/ my Touch, because it was one of the older ones that didn't have a camera. So I can't speak to whether Instagram photos come off of one in a bigger format than web resolution.

When I plug my phone into my computer, bridge automatically asks if I want to download my photos. I have never had issues downloading. Now deleting...what's the trick to quickly deleting them so I don't have to go through one-by-one?

May I ask a stupid question? Why do you use Instagram? Is it because the foto's are cute with the effects? Because you wrote you do not use Instagram for the social aspect of sharing but purely for scrapbook photos. If it the square size that you find attractive than there are other apps that do a much better job than Instagram. In fact in the iPhoneography world Instagram is known for it's lousy output and hardly anyone uses it other than for social purposes. The app 6x6 does a wonderful job with high resolution and shooting very clear photos. If I want a gimmicky effect in my photos I import them into another filter app and use their filter. Sounds like more work but I like to have that high resolution for printing my square photos.
There are a million photo apps in the store, some very good ones are free, I paid for the 6x6 $0.99 and enjoy the square formats. Here is his website where he explains in great detail how to get the most out of your camera app. 6x6 camera They go very well in the Kickstarter project frames that I backed Thumbtiles. Frames especially for square iPhone photos that you can change in a second!
If anyone would like a list of excellent photo apps. for black/white, sepia, vintage, gimmicky, let me know and I'll be happy to post a list.

As for transporting them to your computer, you can do that with a cable but if you using the iCloud service all your photos will be pushed and synced the minute your take them to all your devices. iPad or computer. So no need anymore to use a cable. You will need IOS 5 for iPhone and iPad and OSX Lion on your computer. Not sure how it works for windows you will need to have a look at the Apple iCloud website to find that out.
You also need to realize by storing your photos on FB or Picasa or any other online sharing side that the resolution will be changed. Apple's iPhone camera is capable of taking very high resolution photos by transferring them to FB you will loose that resolution. Try uploading a .png to one of the sites, it will show the file but will have converted it to .jpg 72 dpi. All photos on FB will be converted to 72 or 96 dpi. That will not print a high quality image.

Personally for me, I am finding that I use Instagram b/c of the filters/effects... which yes, I could definitely apply myself in PS/PSE... but my time nowadays is super limited and using the phone's photos (with a built-in filter that softens them up a bit) is just way more realistic for me right now. Between staying at home w/ my 2 kids (age 2 and 4, so -- high maintenance! LOL)... working a part-time job a couple of days a week... trying to design... keeping our lives in order while my husband is gone a lot (he's a college bball coach, so... not around a lot during hoops season right now!)... and trying to get any scrapping/Project Life layouts/etc. finished...? Well, yeah... I am open to cutting some corners here and there if it makes it possible for me to use photos from my phone quickly and easily.

Also, I have the iPhone 4S and the Instagram photos come off it (by cable, to my computer) in a rather large format (not just the 612x612 versions that you previously got). So... I can definitely use them for scrapping on 12x12 layouts... especially my PL-stuff. I don't upload Instagram to FB/etc. I just take photos and fiddle w/ filters/effects while waiting in lines in grocery stores/etc. (multi-tasking! ha) and then I can transfer to my computer by cable at the end of the week, etc. Easy Peasy.
