Journaling: Joe Louis, nicknamed the Brown Bomber was an American professional boxer and the World Heavyweight Champion. He enlisted in the army during World War 2. Realizing Louis’s potential for elevating esprit de corps among the troops, the Army placed him in its Special Services Division rather than deploying him into combat. He is shown here with Major Edward Towey (my father) in northern Africa during one of his campaigns. Louis was eventually promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Legion of Merit medal for "incalculable contribution to the general morale.”
